Germany’s SPD Kicks Off High-Stakes Election Campaign

Chancellor Olaf Scholz has officially kicked off the election campaign for Germany’s Social Democratic Party (SPD), emphasizing the critical importance of the upcoming general election in February. Speaking to party members over the weekend, Scholz accused former coalition partners of obstructing the government’s progress, highlighting the challenging political landscape ahead.

At an event held at the SPD’s headquarters in Berlin, Scholz, along with party leader Lars Klingbeil, expressed confidence in the party’s ability to recover from its current dip in popularity. Both leaders stressed the significance of the upcoming polls, with Scholz warning of the potential long-term impact of any missteps.

“This election is pivotal,” Scholz asserted, recently confirmed as the SPD’s chancellor candidate. “We are at a crossroads. The choices we make now will shape Germany’s future. Any wrong move could lead to serious repercussions.”

Klingbeil assured party members that the SPD is prepared for the challenge, despite the tight race anticipated in the lead-up to the early parliamentary elections, set for February 23.

“The Social Democrats are united and more motivated than ever,” Klingbeil said. “The next 85 days will be tough, but we are ready to fight. If there’s one thing the SPD excels at, it’s coming from behind.”

Recent polls show Scholz gaining ground in public approval, narrowing the gap with his main rival, Friedrich Merz of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). According to an Insa poll conducted for Bild, Scholz’s support has risen to 22%, up by 7% from the previous week, though still trailing Merz at 30%. Meanwhile, Green Party leader Robert Habeck saw a slight dip, polling at 16%.

The SPD’s campaign comes in the wake of a political shake-up last month, when Scholz dismissed Christian Lindner, leader of the Free Democrats (FDP), from his role as finance minister. The move followed prolonged disagreements over the 2025 budget, ultimately leading to the collapse of Germany’s three-way coalition government. The FDP’s exit left Scholz heading a minority government alongside the Greens.

Scholz did not hold back in criticizing Lindner and the FDP, accusing them of deliberately obstructing government efforts. “They actively sought to hinder this federal government’s success,” Scholz said. “Germany cannot afford to face such sabotage again.”

With the election campaign now in full swing, the SPD faces an uphill battle to regain voter trust and secure a mandate for its vision of Germany’s future.
